This morning, head to visit to the Qiao Family Courtyard, used to be the residence of a powerful trading family with significant commercial influence even beyond Shanxi Province, then, visit the Shuanglin Temple, famous for its 2,502 exquisitely painted clay figurines and statues of Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. Next, you will be transferred to the railway station for your onward journey.   (B/L)

Highlights

Qiao Family Courtyard: Qiao Family Courtyard is the best-known of Shanxi's merchant-family mansions (dayuan, or "grand courtyards"), and where Zhang Yimou's Raise the Red Lantern was filmed. Almost midway between Taiyuan and Pingyao, it is easily reached from either city.

Ancient City Wall of Pingyao: The city wall of Pingyao was originally built using rammed earth, and was rebuilt with bricks in 1370 during the reign of Emperor Hong Wu of the Ming Dynasty. The wall testifies to the profound influence of Confucianism in this region, as the 3,000 embrasures on the wall are said to represent the number of disciples of Confucius, and the 72 small watchtowers represent his 72 top disciples.

Shuanglin Temple: Shuanglin Temple is most famous for the 2,000-plus painted statues distributed among 10 halls in three connected courtyards. Highlights include the arhats in Tianwang Dian. Princely and dignified, they are a refreshing change from the usual gilded, grotesque variety.
