Huayan Monastery: Huayan Temple has separate upper and lower temples that share a lane. The upper temple's massive main hall, the Daxiong Bao Dian of 1140, is one of China's few surviving 12th-century buildings. Inside are the lined-up Buddhas of the Five Directions (including the center), seated on elaborately decorated lotus thrones and set off by small standing attendants.

Shuanglin Temple:  The Shuanglin Temple  is most famous for the 2,000-plus painted statues distributed among 10 halls in three connected courtyards. Highlights include the arhats in Tianwang Dian. Princely and dignified, they are a refreshing change from the usual gilded, grotesque variety.

Ancient City Wall of Pingyao: The Ancient City Wall of Pingyao was originally built using rammed earth, and was rebuilt with bricks in 1370 during the reign of Emperor Hong Wu of the Ming Dynasty. The wall testifies to the profound influence of Confucianism in this region, as the 3,000 embrasures on the wall are said to represent the number of disciples of Confucius, and the 72 small watchtowers represent his 72 top disciples.

Jinci Temple: The site of Jinci Temple is a large park with gardens and a lake, as well as pavilions, halls, and temples from various dynasties, beginning with the Song (960-1279). It isn't known when the original temple was built, but the earliest written reference to Jin Ci is from the 6th century.

Yungang Grottoes: The Yungang Grottoes (pinyin: Yúngāng Shíkū) are ancient Buddhist temple grottoes near the city of Datong in the Chinese province of Shanxi. They are excellent examples of rock-cut architecture and one of the three most famous ancient sculptural sites of China. The others are Longmen and Mogao.

Hanging Temple: The Hanging Temple (pinyin: Xuánkong Sì) is a temple built into a cliff near Mount Heng in the province of Shanxi. The closest city is Datong, 65 kilometers to the northwest. Along with the Yungang Grottoes, the Hanging Temple is one of the main tourist attractions and historical sites in the Datong area. Built more than 1400 years ago, this temple is unique not only for its location on a sheer precipice but also because it includes Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian elements.

Wang Family Courtyard: Sixty kilometers (37 miles) south of Pingyao, Wang Family Courtyard dwarfs the Qiao family's mansion. First constructed in the mid-17th century, its expansion continued for over a century. Walking through the 123 courtyards and 1,118 houses takes around 3 hours, but the time is well spent.

Qiao Family Courtyard:
Qiao Family Courtyard is the best-known of Shanxi's merchant-family mansions (dayuan, or "grand courtyards"), and where Zhang Yimou's Raise the Red Lantern was filmed. Almost midway between Taiyuan and Pingyao, it is easily reached from either city.
